Animal Management in Disasters
Published in Paperback by Year Book Medical Pub (15 January, 1999)
Author: Sebastian E. Heath
Average review score:

Readable, comprehensive guide to animal care in disasters
Media attention to the fate of animals during disasters has increased considerably in recent years with more people showing an interest in helping with the animals. The question is, how should we help? This book addresses that question and more. It is an exceptional reference book, first for its compilation of information on animal management but also for its broad coverage of disasters in general and its presentation of the emergency management system. The 200 photographs, illustrations, and tables bring a wealth of objective information and emotional tone to the subject. Written for emergency management, animal care professionals, and volunteers, this book takes a transdisciplinary approach. The chapter, "Myths and Realities" clears away misguided notions about what happens to animals, preparing the reader for practical recommendations based on experience and systematic studies. From that point, the content covers the spectrum of disaster management: types of disasters, the consequences for animals, structure and function of emergency management, preventive measures, developing a response plan, animal evacuation, and management of animals and their owners during large-scale disasters. The emphasis is on preparation and protection rather than the overly romanticized and often less effective rescue.

If hurricanes or earthquakes are uncommon where you live, you may be thinking that preparing for animal care is unnecessary. On a wintry morning in March 1996, 1700 residents of Weyauwega, WI were evacuated when a train derailed and 19 propane tank cars caught fire. Hundreds of pets were left behind because owners didn't think they would be gone long. The evacuation lasted 18 days. Lack of an emergency plan incorporating animals resulted in a humanitarian and public information nightmare. Pet owners and humane groups begged and physically threatened emerency officials regarding pet rescue efforts. Much of this could have been avoided with basic preparation. You can do it. This book will help you.

Bach (Everyman's Library. Emi Classics Music Companions)
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (September, 1997)
Author: Peter Washington
Average review score:

Interesting Book, Lovely Music!
This is a lovely little pack of information and music on Johann Sebastian Bach. The book is clear, concise and interesting and offers a detailed but not too demanding biography of a wonderful composer. The accompanying CD's (3) offer excellent examples of Bach's works and at the back of the book the author provides details of each piece of music choosen on the CD along with details for further reading. If you wanted one book to give you some insight into the life of Bach and his works I could not recommend anything better. I must state that I am no expert on this subject and this is the first book I have read on Bach but like I said it's a great way to start!

Disney's the Little Mermaid: Ariel and Sebastian: Serpent Teen (Cartoon Tales)
Published in Paperback by Golden Pr (February, 1992)
Authors: Walt Disney and Peter David

Naval Studies
FOr those that missed Disney's Limited Series "Little Mermaid" Comics of 1992, this collection reprints the first two comics. Set as a prequel, it tells the story of how Ariel, on one of her treasure hunts, passes through the Black Chasm to run into the Eel People, who have never seen a mermaid before. Adding to this is the emergence of Aquata, Triton's oldest daughter, who is beset by problems of leadership. Someday she will rule, but she can't get any of her sisters to take her serious. In trying to hunt down Ariel, she, too, is captured by the Eel People and is to be fed to the Serpentine, a giant sea dragon. Ariel rises to the occasion with spunk and determination, resolving a situation with intelligence The artwork is very fine, abetted by Philo Barnhart, the man who came up with the character design of Ariel. It is great for children, who see a more serious and grown-up Ariel. It is nice for collectors for the gorgeous artwork and history of Ariel and her life.

Eat Your Poison, Dear (A Sebastian Barth Mystery)
Published in Paperback by Avon (August, 1990)
Author: James Howe
Average review score:

A poisonously good book!
"Eat Your Poison, Dear" is a great book that I have enjoyed immensely. The story tells about how an entire grade is afflicted with the same sickness, and then reveals the truth behind the disease.

I have enjoyed this book for many reasons. I liked the fact that it was a regular novel that contained a mystery for Sebastian Barth (the main character) to solve. You could follow his lines of reasoning, so you were able to understand how he came across the solution to the poisoning in the school. I also liked the unexpected twist that occurred at the end.

On the whole, it was written well, but it wasn't an absolutely AMAZING book. It was interesting and amusing, and a great book to read for some summer fun.

I'd recommend it for 6th-9th graders.

Evvie at Sixteen (The Sebastian Sisters)
Published in Paperback by Starfire (June, 1989)
Author: Susan Beth Pfeffer
Average review score:

its a great summer romance book
When Evvie turns 16, her father tells Evvie to visit Aunt Grace who disapproves of him because he stole Meg, Evvie's mother from Aunt Grace. During the summer, Evvie takes care of her aunt who broke her ankle and meets two guys. Schyller, Clark's nephew who's Aunt Grace's butler and Sam who loves Evvie. When I read this book I personally felt that it was some type of Soap Opera and a historic book. While she's with Aunt Grace, Evvie learns a lot of things that she didn't know before. Like her father, Nick uses a false name by George and how bad Nick's life was when he was a little kid. She also learns things about Sam and his dark history. I recommend this book to anyone who likes summer romances and happy endings

Interpreting Bach at the Keyboard
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (December, 1993)
Authors: Paul Badura-Skoda and Alfred Clayton
Average review score:

For the Pianist
Here is performance information for the pianist without apologies. There are numerous excellent books for organists and harpsichordists from which I have been forced to extrapolate to the piano. Badura-Skoda exhaustively covers all facets of Bach performance on the piano: rhythm, articulation, tempo, and that endless bug-a-boo, ORNAMENTS! He is fearless in expressing his insight and opinion on ornaments and their execution. Musical examples are plentiful, avoiding the need to fetch scores. Of particular interest is his section on the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, a short chapter on 18th c. organ-barrels(!), and a Gouldian Imaginary Interview on the "Urtext Problem". "Interpreting Bach" is an informative reference book reminiscent of Rosenblum's "Performance Practices" in scope and ease of use. Well worth the investment for the pianist knocking on Bach's door seeking entry. Badura-Skoda can help open it for you.

Jesus Crucified and Risen: Essays in Spirituality and Theology in Honor of Dom Sebastian Moore
Published in Paperback by Liturgical Press (July, 1998)
Authors: Sebastian Moore, William P. Loewe, and Vernon Gregson
Average review score:

Excellent overview and objective criticism of Moore's work
This book is a compilation of essays written by friends and fellow theologians of Sabastian Moore. Many of the essays are excellent summaries of the key idea's behind Moore's theological work emphasizing the psychological connection between the passion, death, and resurrection of Christ with the human thought processes that lead to self understanding and action.

According to Moore, the core of all human action stems from the desire to love and to be loved by the object of our desire. And, in its ultimate realization, that true object of our desire is God Himself. In the incarnation, passion and resurrection of Christ we are faced with the annihilation of God (who reveals the gap between our own perceived goodness and actual goodness) and the annihilation of our own transcended potential. Thus, we crucify the Christ potential within ourselves every day through lack of proper action. The result is guilt, shame, alienation, and self justification. But, instead of God bringing forth judgement and condemnation (a projection of our own vindictiveness), God brings forth an offer of forgiveness and redemption. It is in the realization of this unconditional act of acceptance that we overcome those barriers that prevent our own love from growing to fruition (as such, we rise (like Christ) to new levels of authenticity).

I highly recommend this book to those who seek a deeper understanding of the life, death, and resurrection of Christ; an understanding that goes beyond history and into the depths of human cognition.
